Announcing ‘Brave The Dark’

GFM Films are delighted to announce live action feature ‘BRAVE THE DARK’ starring Jared Harris (currently receiving rave reviews for his role in Chernobyl and having previously starred in The Crown, The Terror, Lincoln, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) and to be directed by Damian Harris (Deceived, Gardens of the Night, The Wilde Wedding). In this coming of age feature, Harris will play Stan Deen, a popular drama teacher who tries to help one of his wayward students, whilst dealing with his own issues.

Casting is underway for the role of Nate Busko, Mr Deen’s student who has resigned himself to continuing along the path his troubled upbringing has set him off upon.

Synopsis: Nate Busko has spent 12 of his 17 years running from the past. Fed up with being shunted from one foster home to another, he now lives in his car, dining on cornhusks and using track practice as an opportunity for a shower. By the time night falls he couldn’t be more different from the confident, swaggering persona of school. Alone, he is haunted by fragments of traumatic memories from his past.

Enter Stan Deen a popular high school drama teacher dealing with his own issues. He sees Nate’s latent talent and need for care and guidance where no other teacher has and sets out to help. But in a startling event, Nate is arrested in the middle of school and marched off in handcuffs. Stan follows Nate to the police station and not only organises bail but agrees to take Nate into his own home, despite the raised eyebrows he receives from his fellow teachers.

Stan is prepared to do all he can to help his troubled student. But the question is, can someone really be helped if you’re not willing to help themselves?

Commenting from London, GFM Films Partner, Michael Ryan, said: ‘Stories about mentors that change people’s lives are a perennial success and we’ve been incredibly lucky to get Jared coming off the back of Chernobyl, which is receiving fabulous reviews around the world. Additionally, Jared working with his brother Damian is a producer’s dream and we are excited to be launching this special film to the international marketplace at Cannes.’

Talking about the film, Jared Harris said: ‘I’ve loved this script ever since my brother asked me to take a look at it. Back then it wasn’t with a view to being in it. He just wanted me to throw ideas at him as he was organizing his thoughts about structure and character. I saw in it a powerful story of redemption, the toxic effect of a lie, how running from the pain of the past destroys any hope for a future, and the strength that comes from simple acts of compassion. It’s a true story, a modern story, and a story as old as mankind.’

Director Damian Harris added ‘This is the true story of a good person whose compassion and perseverance not only saved but changed a life, and it comes at a moment when it is of genuine value and service. Jared has become one of the great actors of his generation and I’m excited and proud to be making this film together.’

The film will be produced by Grant Bradley, Dale Bradley and Paul Griffin and is based on a true story.
